Behind The Spanish Barricades - John Langdon-Davies
In May 1936, John Langdon-Davies went to Spain to report on the May Day celebrations in socialist Madrid for the News Chronicle. By the time he returned in August, civil war had broken out and many of those he saw celebrating the May Day holiday lay dead.
On this second trip he criss-crossed Spain on his motorbike with his sixteen-year-old son. From behind the frontline, he witnessed not just the atrocities of war but its comical and human face.
Behind the Spanish Barricades is an impassioned plea for intervention and Langdon-Davies observations are as relevant today as they were in the 1930s.
