This is the story of Bernice Monrath (Alexander) Johnstone, born January 8, 1870, in Howick, North Island, New Zealand of an English father and a Danish mother. A lively story teller, Bernice wrote continuously from the 1920s almost to her death in 1960. Although she was describing her family, her childhood, her schooling, her days as a teacher and her later life, much of what she wrote is actually a social history of her times, detailing the lives of farmers and their families and how their lives changed through the years. Her life, though happy and carefree in youth, had its full share of hard work and tragedy.
