John Roy-Wojciechowski: Born Jan Wojciechowski in Poland, he was just five years old when he and his family were taken by the Russians in 1940 and sent to a brutal labor camp in the Arctic. He and his siblings miraculously survived years of immense hardship, but his mother died in the camps. In 1944, he was among a group of 733 Polish children, many of them orphans, who found refuge in New Zealand. He later became a prominent businessman in New Zealand and co-founded the Polish Heritage Trust Museum. Roy-Wojciechowski passed away in August 2025.
