In 1966, at the age of 37 years, Cliff Tait qualified for his private pilot license. Six months later he was planning to be the first amateur pilot to fly around the world. In 1969, piloting a tiny New Zealand built Airtourer he achieved his aim. By 1973 he was Chief pilot for N.Z. Aerospace Ind., test flying and delivering the company's products. When he resigned his position in 1978 he had accomplished more than 90 international flights, accumulating nearly 5,000 hours of flight time, of which about half had been over the world's oceans.
