In January 1987, the MV Greenpeace departed from New Zealand. Its objective was to establish World Park Antarctica Base, a year-round, non-governmental research station.

 Greenpeace aimed to challenge the commercial and political designs of nations eyeing Antarctica for mineral exploitation. By demonstrating that a non-governmental organization (NGO) could maintain a sustainable, low-impact scientific presence, they campaigned to turn the continent into a globally protected "World Park"
