tThe book chronicles the extraordinary life of Edward Constable (1816–1893), a prominent English immigrant who became a fundamental pioneer in early colonial New Zealand.
Married at 17 and widowed at 18, Edward left his hometown of Maidstone, Kent, for London. He survived by working as an apprentice bricklayer, which was considered one of the worst and harshest trades of the era.
Seeking a fresh start, Edward and his second wife, Jane, boarded the ship Adelaide and arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1840.
After relocating to Auckland, Constable became one of the city's very first landowners. In 1850, he expanded into the Manukau region and built the iconic Kentish Hotel in Waiuku. The establishment still holds the official record as New Zealand’s longest continuously serving hotel with a liquor licence.
