The true story of John Knatchbull, a British man born into a wealthy, noble family. He grew up to become a commander in the Royal Navy, working on the upper deck of a ship. After his naval career, things went downhill. He was caught stealing, lost his high status, and was sent away to Australia as a convict. In Sydney, he committed a terrible murder. He became the first person in Australia to try using "moral insanity" (a temporary loss of mental control) as a defense in court. It did not work, and he was sentenced to die by hanging on the gallows.
