The Prelude is William Wordsworth’s deeply personal autobiographical poem, written in blank verse. It traces the development of his mind and imagination, exploring his childhood, experiences, relationships and growing identity as a poet. Begun in 1798 when Wordsworth was 28, he continued revising it throughout his life. Intended as an introduction to the unfinished philosophical work The Recluse, The Prelude was published only after his death in 1850, with its title given by his widow, Mary Wordsworth.
