Sarah Blaffer Hrdy’s The Woman That Never Evolved examines female behaviour and sexuality through the lens of evolutionary biology and primate studies. Hrdy challenges the traditional idea of women as naturally passive, submissive and nurturing, showing that female primates can be competitive, independent, sexually assertive and highly strategic in seeking resources, mates and protection for their offspring. Drawing on examples from primate societies, she explores female dominance, cooperation, sexual behaviour and maternal investment, while also examining why males remain dominant in many species, including humans. The book argues that understanding the evolutionary origins of sexual inequality can help women better understand—and ultimately shape—their own social and biological inheritance.
