This well-researched and heartwarming true story tells the remarkable tale of Paddy the Airedale, a stray dog who became a beloved Wellington legend during the Great Depression. After losing his young owner, Paddy made the waterfront his home, where he was cared for by watersiders, sailors, taxi and bus drivers. He travelled aboard ships, visited coastal ports and even flew in a Gypsy Moth, while rumours claimed he reached San Francisco. Adopted by the Wellington Harbour Board as Assistant Night Watchman, responsible for “pirates, smugglers and rodents,” Paddy became a much-loved local character. His death brought Wellington to a standstill, and today his memory is preserved by a statue in the city.
