The English translation of Dom Felice Vaggioli’s lively and controversial 1896 history of Aotearoa New Zealand. An Italian Benedictine priest who lived in New Zealand from 1879 to 1887, Vaggioli recorded Maori and Pakeha customs and gathered accounts of major events, including the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the conflicts in Taranaki and Waikato.
Strongly critical of British colonialism and Protestant influence, Vaggioli’s original Italian edition was almost entirely destroyed, leaving only a handful of copies. Decades later, John Crockett discovered one in the Auckland Catholic Diocese archives and translated it into English.
