Witold Pilecki was a Polish resistance operative who deliberately allowed himself to be imprisoned at Auschwitz in 1940 to investigate the Nazi concentration camp, report on its atrocities and organise an underground resistance movement. Over more than two years inside the camp, he built a network of prisoners, gathered evidence of Nazi crimes and secretly smuggled reports to the outside world.
Drawing on previously unpublished family papers, archival material and interviews with surviving resistance members, this account reveals Pilecki’s extraordinary courage and his efforts to alert the Allies to the unfolding Holocaust. It is a compelling story of resistance, sacrifice and one man’s determination to confront the Nazi regime from within Auschwitz.
