A fascinating social history of the Boston Workhouse, later known as St John’s, Woodlands Court and Frampton House, told through the childhood memories of Anne, whose parents Frank and Jessie Egerton were Master and Mistress from 1930 until Frank’s death in 1952. Anne describes the changing role of the workhouse from a strict institution for the poor to more of a rest home for the infirm and penniless, while recalling how her parents worked to improve residents’ lives within the limitations imposed upon them. The book also traces the history of the poor relief system and parish workhouses around Boston from the 18th century.
