An important collection of writings by and about some of Okinawa’s most influential karate and kobudo (traditional weapons arts) masters. The anthology features previously untranslated works by Miyagi Chojun, founder of Goju Ryu karate; Mabuni Kenwa, founder of Shito Ryu; Taira Shinken, regarded as the father of modern Ryukyu Kobudo; Chibana Choshin, founder of Kobayashi Shorin Ryu; and Motobu Choki, a legendary fighter who later taught many students who became masters themselves.
Renowned martial arts researcher Patrick McCarthy provides extensive commentary and research on these masters, the systems they developed, and the establishment of Okinawan karate in mainland Japan before the Second World War.
Volume 1 includes Taira Shinken’s Ryukyu Kobudo Taikan: An Encyclopedia of Ancient Ryukyuan Martial Arts, together with McCarthy’s study, Taira Shinken: The Father of Modern Kobudo.
