Lady Elizabeth Russell was a formidable Elizabethan noblewoman, intellectual and radical Protestant whose controversial actions included bribery, rioting and kidnapping. In 1596, she led a campaign against William Shakespeare and the Lord Chamberlain’s Men that helped close the Blackfriars Theatre. Ironically, the closure contributed to the construction of the Globe, ultimately helping shape Shakespeare’s enduring legacy.
