This book tells the story of Florence Woodhead, appointed Maori Organiser for the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in 1913. Raised in a remote Maori village near Lake Taupo, she developed fluency in te reo Maori and a deep understanding of Maori culture. Her work took her on horseback, often alone, through the rugged and lawless gumfields of Northland. Drawing on her diary and recorded conversations with broadcaster Alwyn Owen, the narrative recounts her childhood, travels in the north and later life as a farming wife.
